Blog #2

Throughout my life, I never really used Microsoft Word. My school system in my home town mainly used Google as their technological choice. Thus, I am not confident in using MS since it was just never really taught growing up. Also, I am a transfer student so my freshman year and my old school allowed us to use Google. They did not have a preference in what we used so I just never broke off from using what I know. Then, when I came to FSU, I was coerced to learn how to use MS. This was a huge adjustment for me especially since they expected me to be confident in using MS and Canvas when I just never used them before. I prefer to use Google Docs for completing assignments because it’s just what I know. I am confident with the tools regarding it and the structure of it is simplistic to me.

I believe that being a leader is a significant aspect in the teaching setting. A teacher must be an efficient leader in order to lead the classroom. They must be a role model for their students because they are not only teaching them information but forming them into good people. They shape them into how to be a good person and thrive in the world. After reading, I became more familiar with how a teacher shapes how we view technology. They are the main person who guides us with technological skills that will guide us through learning.

I don’t necessarily agree with the term “digital native”. I think there are some truths to it regarding those who grew up alongside technology and have become more experienced with it. But, I think it creates the assumption that they are experts in everything with technology. This might not be the case for all, especially with technology in school. It allows this assumption from teachers that us students know efficient ways navigating technology with school. I think that I have had an advantage since my generation grew up with technology but still am not the best with using it. I have noticed some differences between myself and teachers with using technology. Since my mom is a teacher there are times now where she will ask me how to do something regarding technology. Being a digital native, I have learned over time new tricks and websites that can help learning become easier such as quizlets etc. Tools I have just picked up over my course in school that I have just stored in my toolbox that help me navigate learning. I anticipate that future students will be even more advanced in technology since the increase in popularity with it. I hope though as technology becomes more prominent that we do not lose our basic old school ways of teaching.
